•  Bulloch County was created from Bryan and Screven Counties by an Act of the general assembly February 8th 1796.
•  Bulloch County was Georgia 's 21 st county named of a 159 counties.
•  Originally, Bulloch County contained part of Evans, Candler, Emanuel, and Jenkins Counties .
•  The City of Statesboro is the county seat of Bulloch County .
•  Bulloch County is approximately 682 square miles.
•  Population for 2000 was 55,983 and is now estimated to be approximately 60,344

Jenkins County
Jenkins County, the 138th county formed in Georgia, was created in 1905 from territory then belonging to the counties of Bulloch, Burke, Emanuel and Screven. The county was named for Governor Charles J. Jenkins. It was originally proposed the county be called Dixie. <Click here to read more>
 
 
Quick Facts About Jenkins County
    •   The Millen Big Buckhead Church, shown in the picture above, constructed in 1830, is one of the oldest structures still standing in Georgia.
    •   The county seat of Jenkins County is the City of Millen, which was originally called Seventy-Nine or Old 79 because of its distance from Savannah.
    •   The population of Jenkins County is 8,575.

    •   Magnolia Springs State Park is in Jenkins County. This 948-acre park is named for the crystal clear spring that puts out nine million gallons of clear, cold (64 degree) water every day.

    •   Within the county is the site of Fort Lawton, a 42-acre stockade. This was the largest camp ever built by the Confederacy to receive prisoners-of-war. Built in 1864, it was later burnt down.

Burke County

Quick Facts About Burke County
Known as the "Bird Dog Capital of the World," Waynesboro was named for General Anthony "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a famous Revolutionary soldier.
 
Located in East Central Georgia, Burke County is about 25 miles south of the metropolitan Augusta area and 100 miles north of Savannah. Surrounding counties include Emanuel, Jefferson, Jenkins, Richmond and Screven. Burke County has an area of 834 square miles.

Climate:
The area boasts a pleasant average temperature of 64 degrees. Consequently, Burke County residents enjoy long, warm summers and cool, mild winters. Rainfall averages 44.49 inches annually and snowfall is rarely recorded.

Population:
The 2000 census reported that Burke County has a population of 22,243. The City of Waynesboro’s population is 5,813. The city of Sardis has 1,171 residents. Midville 457. Keysville 170. Girard 227.
